REVIEWS OF BENJAMIN KRESS, "SOMEBODY, ANYBODY, NOBODY" AT CALLICOON FINE ARTS (DECEMBER 9, 2011 - JANUARY 22, 2012)

"The modestly sized paintings in this promising debut portray shrouded figures in masks both literal and metaphorical. At first glance, "Linda on Bed" appears to depict the supermodel Linda Evangelista relaxing in the nude; in fact, it's a self-portrait of the artist wearing a supermodel mask. The spirit of surrealism pervades, notably in a silvery bust of a sleeping figure recumbent on a bed of glass beads."

"The Brooklyn-based painter and sculptor's work with masks in intensely and creepily beautiful. In these new canvases and cast faces, he goes from life-sized yet eerily lifeless mixed-media heads to brilliantly luminescent oil paintings of himself wearing those masks, their complex layers of metals, plastics and glass creating all kinds of surreal, otherworldly reflections."
